ChatGPT on Apple CarPlay: Limited Voice Integration

On March 31, OpenAI took a significant step by making its renowned chatbot, ChatGPT, compatible with Apple CarPlay. This update comes shortly after the release of iOS 26.4 and marks a notable advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence in vehicles. However, interaction with ChatGPT via CarPlay remains exclusively voice-based. No text or images are displayed on the vehicle's screen. While Google Gemini and Claude are also eligible for this category, they have yet to offer a similar update.

For iPhone users who have installed the app, a ChatGPT icon now appears in the CarPlay interface. Tapping on it initiates a voice conversation, but without a keyboard or visible text responses. Apple has specified in its CarPlay Developer Guide that applications in this category must be limited to voice interaction. The interface consists of a listening indicator, a mute button, and another to end the session. Previous conversations can be accessed, but only in list form, without text responses.

Access Subject to Individual Approval by Apple

For an application to be integrated into CarPlay under this new category, it must obtain a "special entitlement" issued by Apple. This process also involves implementing the functionality according to strict criteria.

Apple enforces a unique interface model that all applications must adhere to. Thus, the voice command screen is mandatory as soon as voice services are activated. Additionally, a maximum of four action buttons is allowed, and no text or images can be displayed in response to queries. Unlike Siri or automotive brand assistants, the chatbot cannot control vehicle or iPhone functions.

ChatGPT in the Car: The Q&A Game

Proprietary assistants from manufacturers, such as "Hey Mercedes" at Mercedes-Benz or the Reno system at Renault, allow interaction with vehicle settings or management of system functions. In contrast, ChatGPT on CarPlay is limited to answering questions posed aloud, with responses also being vocal, without direct access to the iPhone or the vehicle.

It is also important to note that there is no activation word for ChatGPT: the user must manually open the app before they can start speaking. Apple has confirmed in its documentation that third-party assistants cannot replace Siri's wake word or gain equivalent ambient access. OpenAI clarifies that the use of ChatGPT is geared towards specific tasks rather than free-flowing conversations. According to Apple, the unpredictability of chatbots is not suitable for the driving environment, a position that seems reasonable.

Google Gemini and Claude, while eligible for this new category, have not yet released a compatible update. On Apple's side, iOS 27, expected at WWDC on June 8, is set to bring a redesign of Siri in the form of a generative assistant, with an integration of Google Gemini announced to enhance certain features.
