A Temporary Legal Victory for Anthropic
Anthropic has recently achieved a significant legal victory against the Trump administration. A federal court in San Francisco, presided over by Judge Rita Lin, granted the company a preliminary injunction. This ruling temporarily blocks the presidential order prohibiting federal agencies from using Anthropic's artificial intelligence models.
Judge Lin also suspended the Pentagon's classification of Anthropic as a security risk. This designation had been viewed as a retaliatory measure for expressing disagreement with the government, which the judge described as "illegal retaliation" under the First Amendment.
Background of the Dispute
The dispute between Anthropic and the U.S. government stems from a $200 million contract. The Pentagon sought unrestricted access to Anthropic's Claude models. However, the company demanded assurances to prevent its models from being used for military purposes, particularly for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.
In response to Anthropic's refusal, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth classified the company as a "supply chain risk." This designation made Anthropic the first U.S. company to receive such a status. A final judgment on this matter is still pending.
