AI: An Ally for Succeeding in Your Job Interviews
Going through a job interview is often a source of stress for many candidates. The key to success lies in thorough preparation and the ability to establish good human contact. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) offers new perspectives for effectively preparing for this crucial stage of the recruitment process.
Exploring the Company and the Interviewer with AI
Before attending an interview, it is essential to know the company and the person who will be interviewing you well. This involves researching several aspects:
- The company's history
- Its market position
- Its corporate culture
- Its current strategies and the challenges it faces
- Its financial situation
- The latest news about it
This information is fundamental to demonstrate that you are a serious and well-informed candidate. Cord Harper, a career coach, emphasizes that AI can greatly simplify this research process. In the past, it took hours to gather this data. Today, AI tools allow you to quickly obtain valuable basic information, provided you formulate your queries correctly. However, Harper stresses the importance of verifying the data provided by AI to avoid any errors.
Anticipating Interview Questions with AI
Job interviews often include questions aimed at assessing your personality, work ethic, and judgment ability. Araceli "Sally" Pérez-Ramos, associate director of education and career coaching at Wake Forest School of Business, advises students and clients to prepare ten STAR stories. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, and Results, and these narratives demonstrate how you react in different situations.
However, not all interviewers stick to simple questions. Pérez-Ramos recommends using AI to prepare for more complex questions. For example, you can ask a chatbot:
- "I am interviewing for an entry-level data analyst position at ABC Company. What first-round questions can I expect to receive?"
Planning and Practicing Your Responses with AI
Once you have identified potential questions, it’s time to plan your responses. Harper has worked with clients to use AI to generate response ideas. A prompt could be:
- "Use my resume and LinkedIn profile to help me formulate good answers to these questions."
It is crucial not to memorize the answers or rely on a cheat sheet. "You need to review and adjust these responses. Then, you must practice these answers out loud," advises Harper.
Pérez-Ramos also suggests practicing with a friend or family member, or even enlisting the help of a career coach. "AI cannot replace a real person and the genuine feedback you will receive," she points out. This human interaction remains essential for refining your answers and building confidence.
