Artificial intelligence is already highly effective in coding, but it is also becoming increasingly powerful in fields such as science, biology, and chemistry. Upon the release of its Claude Fable 5 model, Anthropic had to restrict its performance in the areas of biology and chemistry to prevent the technology from being misused for dangerous purposes, such as creating a new virus. For most queries related to these two fields, Claude Fable 5 automatically redirects the user to Claude Opus 4.8, a less powerful AI.
However, in the right hands, this unprecedented computational power can also contribute to significant advancements for humanity. Anthropic intends to leverage artificial intelligence to discover new treatments. According to a report from CNBC, Anthropic has already launched an internal program focused on using AI to discover new drugs. According to Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, the initiative will focus on discovering treatments for neglected diseases that traditional pharmaceutical laboratories overlook.
Claude Science: A New Tool for Research
Anthropic has just launched Claude Science, a product specifically designed for research. While Anthropic already offers Claude Code for developers, Claude Cowork for automating administrative tasks, and Claude Design for designers, this new tool is described as an “AI-based workspace” specifically tailored for scientists.
“Claude Science is an application that integrates the most commonly used tools and libraries by researchers, generates verifiable artifacts, and provides flexible access to computing resources,” the company states.
By launching this product, Anthropic is broadening its target audience and potential revenue sources, as Claude Science is offered to users of the paid subscriptions Claude Pro, Max, Teams, and Enterprise.
Anthropic's AI is making significant strides in research-related fields, and the company had to restrict Claude Fable 5 on chemistry and biology questions as a precaution. It aims to harness the power of generative AI to discover treatments for diseases neglected by the pharmaceutical industry.
