Apple and the $250 Million Settlement: Are You Affected?

If you purchased an iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 at launch, you may be entitled to financial compensation as part of a class action lawsuit against Apple. This lawsuit concerns the Apple Intelligence features that were announced at launch but not available immediately. These features were detailed later during the WWDC 2026 conference.

In May, Apple decided to settle the lawsuit by agreeing to pay $250 million to customers who bought the affected models during a specific period. The lawsuit accused Apple of misleading consumers by promising artificial intelligence features that were not ready at the time the new iPhones were released. The compensation amounts range from $25 to $95 per eligible device.

In a statement to CNET, an Apple spokesperson claimed that the company chose to settle the dispute to focus on its core mission: providing innovative products and services to its users.

Why is there a lawsuit regarding Apple Intelligence?

During the announcement of the iPhone 16, Apple highlighted artificial intelligence features, including an enhanced Siri capable of functioning as a true intelligent agent. However, at the time of the phones' release, these features were not yet available. They were introduced five weeks later with the iOS 18.1 update.

The class action alleged that Apple flooded the market with misleading advertisements, prompting consumers to purchase the new iPhones based on unfulfilled promises regarding Siri. While some Apple Intelligence features, such as Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Clean Up, were launched shortly after, they did not meet the initial expectations set by Apple.

Who is eligible for the $250 million settlement?

Customers who purchased one of the following models between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may claim compensation:

  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16E
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are included because they had the necessary hardware to support the Apple Intelligence features. It is estimated that around 36 million customers could be affected by this settlement.

How to claim your share of the settlement

For now, you will need to wait. Apple must provide a list of eligible customers to a settlement administrator. After verification, the company Verita will send notifications via email and postal mail, directing customers to a dedicated settlement website. This site is not yet online. Customers will have 90 days after receiving the notice to submit their claims.

When can you expect to receive a settlement payment?

Apple must submit the information of the affected customers within five days of the settlement approval, scheduled for June 17, 2026. A 45-day notification period will follow to inform potential customers of their eligibility.

Payments will be made within 60 days following the resolution of final details, such as exclusions and objections. Thus, the first payments could be made after September 2026, depending on judicial timelines and any potential extensions.
