AI Revolutionizes British Military Planning
The British Army has integrated an artificial intelligence system named ASGARD to optimize its military operations. This innovative system has drastically reduced the time required for strategic planning, from 72 hours to just 1 hour. This advancement was confirmed by General Roly Walker, head of the British land forces, who highlighted ASGARD's effectiveness during a conference in London.
Enhanced Efficiency on the Battlefield
General Walker detailed ASGARD's impressive capabilities, stating that the system allows a British army corps to target 10 times more objectives in a day. During his speech at the Royal United Services Institute conference, he admitted to having underestimated ASGARD's performance the previous year. "A corps planning cycle that used to take 72 hours can now be completed in one hour," he said, adding humorously, "What they will do with the other 71 hours, I don't know."
ASGARD: A "Digital Targeting Web"
ASGARD is described by the UK as a "digital targeting web." This system is designed to collect and analyze real-time data on the battlefield, facilitating decision-making and coordination of attacks by commanders. ASGARD is part of a broader trend of integrating AI into military operations, similar to the Maven system from Palantir for the Pentagon and the Delta platform used by Ukraine.
Massive Investment in Military AI
The UK has announced an investment of £1 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) to develop such systems. Walker specified that ASGARD would enable the targeting of 10 times more targets daily, with the only limitation being the amount of available ammunition. "ASGARD is literally a digital juggernaut that evolves every 8 to 12 weeks," he added.
Centralized and Efficient Management
Within the command structure of the British Army, a corps is responsible for logistics, intelligence, strategic strikes, and troop deployment. ASGARD is therefore a headquarters-level platform, used by senior commanders, often remote from the battlefield.
Practical Exercises in London
Last month, an exercise was conducted using ASGARD from a subway station under Trafalgar Square to manage troops in Estonia. This makeshift headquarters processed 10 terabytes of data per day, equivalent to "nearly three months of non-stop high-definition Netflix," according to the British Army.
Towards a New Military Era
Another multi-week exercise took place at Charing Cross station. Walker compared this moment to a military revolution, similar to the introduction of tanks against horses. "If I ever think that this was a moment where we had a conversation about what could be the 'tank versus horse' moment of our century, I think it's in this domain," he stated.
Strengthening Capabilities Against Russia
The general also mentioned the deployment of thousands of drones to British units and the introduction of 50 electronic warfare systems used in Ukraine. To prepare for a potential confrontation with Russia, it is essential that a British corps can match the capabilities of a current Ukrainian corps. "In the coming year, I expect to see many more of our remote and autonomous systems on the front line on our eastern flank, ready to strike and act within 30 minutes," he concluded.
