ChatGPT Reintegrates WhatsApp in Europe Under Regulatory Conditions
If you live in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you can once again use ChatGPT on WhatsApp. As a reminder, this integration was removed by OpenAI in January to comply with a new regulation from Meta that prohibited this type of chatbot (except for Meta AI) on its messaging service. However, as of this Monday, the feature is accessible again.
“On WhatsApp, users can interact with ChatGPT, import images, send voice messages, create images, and use ChatGPT in many languages. It is also possible, but not mandatory, to link your ChatGPT account to benefit from higher usage limits,” explains OpenAI. To access ChatGPT on WhatsApp, simply follow this link. You can also start chatting with ChatGPT on WhatsApp by sending a message to the verified contact 1-800-CHATGPT, at +1 800 242 8478.
OpenAI Takes Advantage of Ongoing Investigation by the European Commission
As a reminder, by changing the rules of WhatsApp to exclude AI chatbots that compete with Meta AI, the Meta group triggered the opening of an investigation by the European Commission. This investigation is still ongoing. However, pending the conclusions, Brussels has taken interim measures that require Meta to restore free access to WhatsApp for competing multifunctional AI chatbots.
“This will help prevent serious and irreparable harm to competition in this growing market, caused by Meta's behavior, which appears to violate EU competition rules,” Brussels explained in the announcement of this decision in June. For now, it is unclear when the European Commission's antitrust investigation will conclude. It specifies that, for this type of procedure, no legal deadline is defined.
In January, OpenAI had to remove its integration of ChatGPT from WhatsApp to comply with Meta's new rules. But today, the famous chatbot is once again accessible on this messaging app in the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
Meta is under investigation by Brussels for antitrust issues. While awaiting the conclusions of this investigation, the European Commission is requiring Meta to allow free access for competitors of Meta AI on WhatsApp.
