ChatGPT to Enhance Its Images Through New Partnership
Images on ChatGPT are typically sourced from Google, but that is about to change. OpenAI's AI will become more relevant thanks to a partnership, offering better-contextualized images. OpenAI's tools will be able to display images from Getty Images.
Getty Images has announced a multi-year partnership with OpenAI. Under this agreement, the agency's licensed content libraries will be accessible to OpenAI to illustrate user search results. Image results may appear in OpenAI's search results as well as in ChatGPT. However, these images will not be royalty-free for all users.
A Gradual Shift
The agreement marks a significant evolution in Getty Images' stance towards artificial intelligence. In September 2022, the agency had banned AI-generated works from its library, before initiating legal action against Stability AI a few months later for copyright infringement, a lawsuit that was ultimately dismissed in late 2024.
A year after this ban, Getty had launched its own generative AI tool, trained on its own content and developed in partnership with Nvidia's Edify model. The produced images came with a royalty-free license.
Ultimately, Getty Embraces AI
In October 2025, the agency took another step by signing an agreement with Perplexity AI, allowing its search tools to access the Getty library. This agreement specifically stated that Perplexity committed to improving how images are displayed, including photo credits accompanied by a link to the source, to better inform users about the legal use of licensed content.
Perplexity is also facing lawsuits related to alleged illegal use of copyrighted content.
Images to Train OpenAI's AI Models?
One point remains unclear in this agreement with OpenAI. Getty did not specify whether its images could be used to train AI models. In comparison, the contract signed with Perplexity explicitly excludes this possibility.
The lack of clarity on this point in the partnership with OpenAI could raise questions, as the issue of copyright in the field of AI remains a sensitive and widely debated topic.
