Convey Raises $38 Million for Its AI Colleagues
Convey, a startup founded last year, has successfully raised $38 million in a Series A funding round. This round was led by the renowned venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, with notable participation from Khosla Ventures and Pear VC. Convey focuses on developing what it calls "AI colleagues," tools designed to lighten the repetitive workload of employees. The AI agent sector is booming, with many startups and large tech companies seeking to create solutions that can act on behalf of workers. In this context, Salesforce recently announced the acquisition of Fin, an AI-powered customer service agent platform, for the impressive sum of $3.6 billion.
A Different Approach: The AI Colleague
Convey aims to stand out by avoiding the label of "agent," which is often associated with an overload of work. Rohan Chopra, co-founder and CEO of Convey, explained to Business Insider that the company prefers the term "colleague." According to him, a colleague is responsible for an overall outcome rather than just a single task. This distinction is crucial for Convey, which wants its solutions to be perceived as work partners rather than mere task executors.
The Inspiration Behind Convey
The idea for Convey took root in Rohan Chopra's mind over ten years ago while he was working as an engineer at DoorDash. He recalls a colleague, "Steve," who spent considerable time manually managing deliveries via his iPhone. Steve had to track each delivery person and assign orders, a tedious and time-consuming process. Chopra helped automate this workflow at DoorDash, allowing Steve to focus on more strategic tasks. With the evolution of AI, Chopra realized that other companies, lacking DoorDash's engineering resources, could also benefit from this automation.
A Strategic Investment
Joe Schmidt, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, joined Convey's board following this investment. He highlighted two main reasons for this commitment: the quality of the founding team and the enormous potential for automating manual work. According to Schmidt, this technology could enable every company to grow faster by freeing employees to focus on tasks they truly enjoy.
Prestigious Clients
Convey has already attracted several major companies, including NBCUniversal, Samsara, TelevisaUnivision, Unity, Faire, and ChargePoint. These companies have adopted Convey's solutions to optimize their internal processes and free their employees from repetitive tasks.
Competition from AI Giants
Despite its initial success, Convey faces the potential threat from large AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, which may decide to invest more in the AI agent space. Chopra remains confident, comparing the current situation to DoorDash's early days when skeptics feared direct competition from Uber. He believes that large platforms do not always win every market, and Convey's advantage lies in its specialization and focus.
The Impact of AI on Employment
Convey's funding comes at a time when many workers are concerned about the impact of AI on employment. Companies like Snap, Block, and Wix have recently cited AI as a factor in their layoff decisions. Chopra acknowledges this concern but emphasizes that employees closest to the work often seem most enthusiastic about delegating repetitive tasks. He mentions the example of an employee at a major restaurant chain who spent her evenings manually entering data, a task she preferred to avoid.
The Future of Routine Tasks
According to Chopra, the best applications for AI colleagues involve routine and operational tasks, where a correct and objective response is expected. This allows workers to focus on more strategic and relational aspects of their jobs, areas that will remain human for a long time. "That's the part that will remain human well into the future," he concludes.
