Figma and AI: A Creative Partnership According to Dylan Field
Dylan Field, the CEO of Figma, recently shared his perspective on the impact of artificial intelligence in the field of graphic design. According to him, AI should not be seen as a threat to graphic designers, but rather as a creative partner. Field emphasizes the idea that AI can be a powerful tool for designers, helping them push the boundaries of creativity beyond the current capabilities of machines.
Field strongly encourages designers not to limit themselves to the "average" capabilities of AI. He explains that AI models are trained on data distributions, which leads them to create designs often perceived as "average" by the public. In contrast, human creators have the unique ability to conceive truly original and unprecedented works. Field also highlighted that AI-generated design could transform creative careers into more generalized roles.
Human Originality vs. AI Standardization
During an appearance on the New York Times podcast "Hard Fork," Field stressed the importance for creators to venture beyond conventional limits. He stated, "If you are in the distribution and you are not really pushing the boundaries, I think you are in a worse situation than if you are actually exploring the frontier of human knowledge, creativity, and what you can produce in the world. And doing something fundamentally new as an expression of yourself. So, I am excited about that."
These statements were made during an event in San Francisco organized by the podcast, and a video of the interview was recently posted online. Field took this opportunity to share his optimistic vision for the future of design in the age of AI.
Figma and Competition in the AI Design Space
Figma has recently introduced its own AI-based design tools, called "vibe," which allow users to create prototypes of applications and other software. This initiative places Figma in direct competition with other tech giants like Google, which offers its own AI design tool, Stitch, and Anthropic, which has developed Claude Design.
Field also addressed the impact of AI on marketing, emphasizing that the increase in AI-generated designs should encourage companies to stand out with more authentic and original creations. He stated, "In advertising now, we see ways to prove authenticity, to prove that you are actually creating something that is not AI-generated, and some companies are really committing to that path."
Towards a New Era of Interactive Creativity
In the design sector, Field anticipates an evolution towards greater interactivity and creativity, transforming software into true creative media. He rejects the notion that AI could lead to a massive disappearance of jobs in graphic design. On the contrary, he predicts that roles will become more generalized, with more people identifying as "creative designers."
Field concludes by stating that this trend towards a more generalized approach is already noticeable, with individuals feeling the need to embody this versatility in their careers. This evolution could well redefine the landscape of design, where innovation and originality will become the watchwords.
