Google to Launch AI Overviews in France by September 2026
The tech giant Google will roll out AI Overviews in France before September 23, 2026, integrating summaries generated by its AI Gemini directly into search engine results. This major transformation is causing concern among news publishers.
Google's search is set to change its face in France with the arrival of AI Overviews. Google is preparing to deploy AI Overviews and its conversational mode AI Mode in France by September 23, 2026. This feature, which many fear and others eagerly await, is expected to profoundly transform the search experience by integrating summaries produced by Gemini, Google's in-house AI, directly at the top of the results. France, which has done everything to delay the deadline, will be among the last nations to benefit from this, as reported by Ouest-France late Monday. French media are not celebrating, fearing a decline in audiences following a drop in advertising revenue.
AI Overviews in France: How Google Search Will Change This Summer
How will Google AI Overviews work? Specifically, the feature will display a summary generated by Gemini at the top of the results page, accompanied by links to the sources. This provides a way to get a quick answer without having to click multiple times. The tool goes hand in hand with AI Mode, which takes it further by enabling conversational search. Here, users can refine and deepen their queries through exchanges with the engine.
France will have waited its turn. It is worth noting that AI Overviews was originally deployed just over two years ago and is now present in more than 120 countries and territories. The Hexagon will be one of the very last to take the plunge, with a launch expected between the time of writing and September 23, 2026.
Google, for its part, displays a certain calm. In the first quarter of 2026, the Mountain View firm recorded a historic record of queries, which it claims is proof that the AI integrated into Google Search stimulates usage rather than hinders it. It should be noted that the criteria for appearing in AI Overviews remain the same as those for traditional search, namely quality and authority of the content.
Neighboring Rights, Transparency, and Control: Google's Promises to Publishers
French media view things differently. Their concern is that if internet users find their answers directly on Google, they will no longer click through, and advertising revenues will continue to decline. As plans for workforce reductions unfold left and right, AI Overviews raises a fairly legitimate fear. However, this concern about traffic loss is not new.
To try to ease tensions, Google took the initiative by writing to French publishers on Monday, June 29. Among the topics discussed were:
- The option not to appear in AI results
- Transparency regarding generated impressions
- Compensation for neighboring rights, only for content actually viewed by users
The 450 publishers already covered by this scheme will be automatically included.
Sébastien Missoffe, director of Google France, attempts to reassure by stating that the feared traffic decline has not materialized in countries where AI Overviews is already active, and that AI summaries rarely appear on current affairs topics. He also reminds that since September 2023, Google Extended allows each publisher to decide whether their content can be used to train Gemini, and that Google pays tens of millions of euros in neighboring rights to the French press each year.
It remains to be seen whether Google's promises will hold up once the feature is deployed. French publishers will certainly be checking.
