The Illusion of Efficiency Brought by AI
In today's professional world, artificial intelligence is often seen as a miracle solution for solving daily problems. It promises to simplify tasks, whether it's drafting meeting minutes or managing scheduling conflicts. For instance, if you're short on time to write a report, AI can take care of it. In the case of overlapping meetings, it can synthesize the essential information from a gathering. In the future, it might even represent you in those meetings.
AI offers unprecedented access to knowledge and automates many tasks deemed "low value-added." However, by providing immediate solutions, it often prevents a thorough examination and resolution of the root causes of the problems it is supposed to address.
Organizational Debt: A Hidden Cost of AI
On one hand, AI seems to enhance efficiency and save time. The results are visible almost instantly, following a simple introduction to using commands. This apparent efficiency has led to increasing pressure within companies to adopt AI. Who would dare to claim they lack the time to draft a document or verify information?
However, this performance-driven approach to AI creates a double debt. The first is individual and cognitive, as shown by a MIT study in 2025: AI, by making tasks more comfortable, ultimately weakens its users mentally. The second is collective, known as organizational debt. By favoring technological solutions over structural revisions, companies burden their internal systems.
Take the example of automating meeting minutes. The time saved by using AI must be viewed in light of not questioning the very utility of the meeting, which could lead to maintaining ineffective gatherings. Furthermore, the burden of understanding is transferred to the reader, who must decode a standardized text. Although AI is progressing, a formatted report does not accurately reflect organizational reality, forcing the reader to discern the essential from the superfluous.
Social Isolation Induced by AI
Another consequence of using AI is the isolation it can create. The algorithms of social and media platforms trap us in our own bubbles of preferences and habits. AI, by automating interactions, further breaks social ties. With massive access to information, consulting colleagues becomes unnecessary. Worse still, by delegating to a machine the creation of interactive content like emails or meeting minutes, we eliminate the nuances and human errors that once fostered dialogue and mutual understanding.
Technology advocates argue that interactions can be personalized by mastering AI commands. However, even if AI can simulate emotions and produce content that evokes them, it does not create genuine human connections. Before being a report producer or a meeting participant, the employee remains primarily a social being.
The Need for a Proactive Approach to Reduce Organizational Debt
Steve Blank, entrepreneur and founder of the Lean Startup approach, warned: “If you do not address organizational debt, it will eventually paralyze the company from within.” This organizational debt freezes structures, directly affecting decision-making capabilities, including those necessary for developing and implementing an AI strategy.
A vicious cycle forms: the pressure to use AI, out of fear of creating technical debt, obscures underlying organizational issues. The persistence of these problems prevents a calm and relevant approach to the transition to AI, which does not resolve technical debt.
These observations highlight the importance of learning lessons for effectively integrating AI. It should not serve as a band-aid for bureaucratic dysfunctions. Before automating, it is crucial to simplify; before accelerating, teams must be reconnected. Sustainable performance will not arise from an tool's ability to mask weaknesses, but from the courage to use the time freed up by AI to rebuild a healthy organization.
