Launch of the Gemini App for Mac
Google has recently introduced a dedicated desktop application for its Gemini service, specifically for Mac users. This application retains all the features of the website but also offers additional capabilities that enhance the user experience. Indeed, it allows for the analysis of content from any shared window on your computer, which was not possible with the web version.
The Gemini app for Mac is easily accessible, whether through a desktop icon or a keyboard shortcut. It enables users to share any application or open window on their Mac with Gemini. This allows the AI to summarize or answer questions about the content, bringing a new dimension of interactivity. This feature places Gemini on par with other AI applications like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude AI, and Perplexity, which already have desktop applications. However, unlike these others, the Gemini app is currently only available on Mac.
Installation and Setup
To start using the Gemini app, you need a Mac equipped with an Apple M1 chip or higher, as well as MacOS Sequoia 15 or a later version. The installation process is straightforward: simply visit the Gemini app page for Mac and click the download button. Once the app is installed, you will be prompted to log in with your Google account.
The app can be launched from the Applications folder or added to the Dock for quick access. Keyboard shortcuts are also available to facilitate opening the app: by pressing Option + Shift + Space, the app opens in full-screen mode, while Option + Space allows it to open in a minimized chat window. These shortcuts can be modified in the app settings to suit user preferences.
Features and Modes of Use
The application offers several modes of use depending on your Gemini subscription: Quick, Reflection, or Pro. You can interact with the AI by typing or speaking your request. Additionally, the app allows you to add and analyze files from your Mac, Google Drive, or photos from Google Photos. Google's NotebookLM and Canvas tools are also integrated, providing additional creative possibilities. The AI can also generate photos, videos, or musical pieces according to your needs.
Window Sharing: An Innovative Feature
One of the most appreciated features of the application is window sharing. This option allows users to request help or information about any application, file, or web page open on their Mac. To set up this feature, simply click on the plus icon and select Share Windows. The first time, you will need to grant Gemini the required system permissions. Once this step is completed, you can choose the window you wish to share with the AI.
Although some users may be hesitant to share personal information with Google, the app offers complete control over the shared windows. However, it is advisable not to share sensitive or confidential information.
User Experience and Outlook
During testing, the application demonstrated its ability to correctly identify objects and provide relevant information. For example, by sharing a photo of a statue of Abraham Lincoln, the AI was able to identify it as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, and provided a historical overview of the monument.
Although I primarily use Windows, this Gemini app for Mac proves to be a valuable tool for users within the Apple ecosystem. For those using Windows, Google also offers a new application that allows you to share your entire desktop or a specific window and ask questions about the content, thus providing similar functionalities to those available on Mac.
