An Unconventional Academic and Professional Path

Selinger began his studies at Stanford but did not complete his degree initially. He returned to university in 2000 to finish it and was recruited by Amazon in 2002 during campus interviews. Prior to that, he worked at Dutch Bros, a publicly traded coffee company, where he managed technological aspects. Although he had not initially considered working at Amazon, the opportunity to handle large databases attracted him.

An Intense Immersion at Amazon

In January 2003, Selinger joined the customer behavior research group at Amazon. At that time, the company had a few thousand employees, and he met Jeff Bezos once or twice a week. His office was close to Bezos's, whom he remembers for his intensity and constant laughter. Selinger worked about 80 hours a week in a demanding work culture where efficiency was essential.

Jeff Bezos's Forward-Thinking Vision

Jeff Bezos viewed e-commerce as a trillion-dollar opportunity long before it became obvious to the general public. He had a clear vision and was not swayed by outside opinions. When Selinger joined Amazon, the media predicted the company's bankruptcy, but Bezos continued to invest in warehouses, convinced of the viability of his project.

Organizational Innovations and Data Impact

Bezos introduced the concept of two-pizza teams, small autonomous teams that operate independently. Although many doubted this model, Bezos challenged these preconceived notions, reinventing Amazon's organizational structure to attract top talent. Selinger also played a crucial role in convincing the board of the importance of a dedicated data team, leading to the creation of an on-site advertising unit.

After leaving Amazon in 2004, Selinger co-founded Redfin, a real estate company, where he served as CTO for a year. He then founded Rich Relevance, an AI software company for large retailers, before merging with another company.

Deep Sentinel: Innovation in Security

Selinger founded Deep Sentinel, a security company that uses cameras and a monitoring service connected to an AI. Deep Sentinel stops thousands of active crimes each month at an affordable cost. Selinger self-funded the startup with about $1 million before raising funds, with Jeff Bezos as an investor.

A Balance Between Work and Personal Life

Selinger's daughters contributed to the creation of Deep Sentinel's identity by working on branding and technology. As a father and CEO, Selinger manages offices in the Philippines, Taiwan, and California. All of his employees in the United States work remotely, and he visits the office once or twice a month. The experience gained at Amazon has been the foundation of his career.
