John Jumper, a Nobel Laureate, Leaves Google DeepMind for Anthropic
John Jumper, a renowned chemist and computer scientist, recently announced his departure from Google DeepMind to join Anthropic, a rapidly growing artificial intelligence startup. Jumper, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024 for his contributions to Google’s AlphaFold technology, is the latest to leave Silicon Valley for this promising company.
Jumper spent nearly a decade at Google, during which he gained valuable experience and expressed his gratitude towards the Google DeepMind team. In a message posted on X, he shared: "The entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science. GDM is a special place, and I will always be excited to hear about the incredible things they will discover next."
AlphaFold: A Major Scientific Breakthrough
John Jumper is best known for leading the development of AlphaFold, an artificial intelligence system capable of predicting the three-dimensional structure of proteins from their amino acid sequences. This innovation marked a turning point in medical and biological research, providing scientists with a deeper understanding of protein design. AlphaFold has generated over 200 million protein structure predictions, significantly accelerating a research process that previously took months or even years.
Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, highlighted the lasting impact of Jumper's work with AlphaFold. He stated, "What we achieved with AlphaFold has changed the world and has shown the field what is possible with AI for science and medicine, illuminating the way for how AI can benefit humanity."
A Move Towards AI Startups
Jumper's move to Anthropic is part of a broader trend where many tech leaders from major companies like Google and Meta are turning to AI startups. Anthropic and OpenAI are among the most attractive tech companies at the moment, especially as they consider going public.
Although Jumper has not yet specified his exact role at Anthropic, he mentioned that he would take "some time to recharge" before fully committing to this new adventure.
