Kimi K3: Chinese AI Suspends Sign-Ups After 48 Hours
Is China still lagging behind the United States in the field of AI? Today, that is no longer certain. Indeed, while Chinese companies have already offered numerous open models praised for their more attractive costs, China now also presents an AI that nearly rivals the best models from American giants. Last week, the Beijing-based startup Moonshot launched its new model Kimi K3. Compared to its predecessor, this one boasts significant advancements in performance.
And while Kimi K3 may not surpass Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol, this new AI model comes close to these two American AIs. Furthermore, Kimi K3 is now considered the third most powerful AI model in the world and tops the ranking of “open” AIs. The announcement of this Chinese model has, of course, made headlines in the press. Clearly, its developer was not prepared for such visibility. Indeed, on July 19, Moonshot had to take measures as demand was too high for its servers.
“Kimi K3 has experienced success far beyond our expectations, and our GPUs are feeling the impact. Over the last 48 hours, demand has nearly saturated our current capacities,” stated Moonshot on X. To continue providing a good experience for those already using its AI, the company has decided to suspend new sign-ups for its chatbot. However, the company promises to reopen registrations as soon as it has new computing capabilities.
The Kimi Offering Will Be Revamped to Better Manage Demand
Moonshot also announced the creation of a revamped offering, which will allow the company to better manage its computing power. On one side, there will be a Kimi subscription for web access, on the app, and for Kimi Work. On the other side, there will be a Kimi Code subscription, which will be a tailored offering for those using the AI for coding.
Additionally, the company plans to open Kimi K3, which will differentiate this model from proprietary AIs, such as the flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic. In a document, Moonshot announced that it will publish the complete “weight” of its new model on July 24.
