AI and "Smart Trade": A Revolution in Industrial Professions
Artificial intelligence, far from threatening industrial jobs, is contributing to the emergence of "Smart Trade," technical professions enriched by technology. In the face of a growing shortage of qualified personnel, it is essential to enhance these professions to preserve our economic independence.
Often, the debate surrounding AI focuses on the fear of job destruction, neglecting the opportunities for developing new skills. However, every technological advancement requires a physical infrastructure, which necessitates human skills for its design, construction, and operation.
Behind every data center, every fiber optic network, and every automated system, there are professionals who design, install, maintain, and secure these infrastructures. The enthusiasm for AI should not make us forget that our digital ecosystems, as well as our country's attractiveness for large infrastructures, rely on technical professions that are often undervalued and in short supply.
A recent study by Randstad shows that the demand for climate engineering technicians, essential for cooling data centers, has increased by 57% in France between 2022 and 2025. Similar trends are observed for welders (+69%), maintenance technicians (+47%), and electricians (+41%). Recruiting these profiles now takes about forty days, double the time required three years ago.
These specialists work directly on-site with skills that cannot be automated or dematerialized. Beyond the digital realm, these operational know-how are at the heart of our strategic industries. Whether it is about successfully transitioning to renewable energy, deploying decarbonized infrastructures, or ensuring the autonomy of our national defense, technical mastery is indispensable.
However, as these skills become increasingly crucial for the success of growth, reindustrialization, and sovereignty projects, we are facing a concerning structural shortage. The industrial sector struggles to attract young people, while one million retirements are expected by 2030.
To reverse this trend, it is imperative to reinvent the image of these professions. The era of purely manual tasks is over; we are entering the age of "Smart Trade." Thanks to AI and Industry 4.0, today's technicians are supported by digital tools such as predictive maintenance, simulation of complex production scenarios, and real-time flow optimization.
Securing industrial skills requires a concerted effort from business leaders and public decision-makers. It is crucial to treat the shortage of technical profiles as a major operational risk for our transformation projects, rather than just a recruitment issue. At the same time, it is essential to highlight the increasing integration of new technologies into these professions, while valuing the expertise and commitment of the professionals who practice them.
Finally, it is necessary to transform these technical fields into pathways of excellence. Raising awareness from the school level, providing access to continuous training, and opening up to new profiles—including women, people with disabilities, and those in career transition—are essential to rebuilding our national talent pool and maintaining our production capacity.
Far from a massive substitution of talent by AI, we are witnessing a "Great Adaptation" of skills. France has a historic opportunity to become a great industrial nation again through the mastery of its advanced skills, networks, and infrastructures. But for this, we must recognize that the true architects of the future are not only those who design algorithms but also those who build and maintain the physical ecosystem essential for their execution.
