Internal Tensions at Google Over Military AI
Artificial intelligence, once confined to civilian and productive uses, is now making its way into the military domain. Recently, Google signed a confidential agreement with the Pentagon, triggering a strong reaction among its employees. On May 5, 2026, the disagreement between DeepMind, Google's artificial intelligence lab, and its staff intensified.
DeepMind teams are expressing growing concern over the military use of their technologies. They are demanding official recognition of two unions, CWU and Unite the Union. If this recognition is not granted within 10 days, employees threaten to resort to a "formal legal procedure."
Demands of DeepMind Employees
The headquarters of DeepMind, located in London, is at the center of this turmoil. Employees are calling for the recognition of two unions following the agreement between Google and the Pentagon. They oppose the use of their technologies by Israel and the U.S. military. Their demands include:
- The reinstatement of a commitment not to develop AI-based weapons or surveillance tools.
- The establishment of an independent ethical oversight body.
- The individual right to refuse participation in projects for moral reasons.
DeepMind employees have given their management a 10-day deadline to respond to these demands, which affect at least 1,000 employees at Google's London office. Without a response, they are considering a "formal legal procedure."
Growing Opposition to the Military Agreement
Even before the announcement of this agreement, over 600 Google employees had signed a letter urging management to refrain from providing AI models for classified military operations. The CWU, one of the involved unions, highlighted the staff's concerns regarding the potential use of this technology.
An anonymous DeepMind employee expressed concerns that, even if their work is used for administrative purposes, it could facilitate large-scale acts of violence, making them faster and cheaper. The agreement could also pave the way for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance of American citizens.
