Sam Altman, a Controversial Leader at OpenAI
Internal tensions at OpenAI are escalating as critical testimonies against the company's CEO, Sam Altman, multiply. Described as a brilliant communicator but unable to tell the truth, Altman is dividing opinions within his own camp.
An investigation by the New Yorker reveals that, while OpenAI strives to compete with Anthropic, its leader is accused by colleagues of systematic lying. These accusations raise doubts about his legitimacy to lead such an influential company located at the heart of Silicon Valley.
Accusations of Lying and Manipulative Behavior
The attempt to oust Sam Altman at the end of 2023 appears to have deep roots. His reputation as a manipulator is well established, as evidenced by a board member who describes him as having a "strong desire to please" but an "almost sociopathic lack of concern for the consequences of deceiving others."
Aaron Swartz, a respected figure in Silicon Valley, even labeled Altman a "sociopath" before his death. Ilya Sutskever, former chief scientist at OpenAI, has gathered numerous Slack messages and HR documents to demonstrate a pattern of recurring lies. Meanwhile, Dario Amodei, former research director at OpenAI and founder of Anthropic, has compiled over 200 pages of notes detailing Altman's behavior. His conclusion is unequivocal: "The problem with OpenAI is Sam himself."
Financial Ambitions and Questionable Relationships
Altman's ambitions also raise concerns. He allegedly falsely claimed that features of GPT-4 had been validated by a safety panel. Furthermore, his financial ties with Sheikh Tahnoon of the United Arab Emirates, who reportedly gifted him high-value items, including a Koenigsegg Regera valued at $2 million, have sparked worries. These relationships led the Biden administration to deny him a security clearance due to his "foreign financial ties."
A Worrying Strategic Shift
Altman's shift from being a staunch advocate for AI safety to an "overflowing optimism" about technology, according to the New Yorker, is concerning. Behind the scenes, he has actively fought against the regulations he publicly advocated for, both in Europe and California. As OpenAI considers an IPO in New York, these revelations raise serious questions about Altman's true ambitions and the future direction of the company.
