Mark Cuban, renowned entrepreneur and former "Shark Tank" investor, recently shared his advice on how employees can evaluate their companies in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). According to him, there are five crucial questions every employee should ask themselves to determine if their company is on the right track.
Cuban explained that these questions serve as a guide to assess a company's health in a context where AI is becoming increasingly central. He notably emphasized that if your CEO does not understand AI, it might be time to look for another job. "Start considering another job if your CEO has no idea about AI," he stated.
The Five Questions to Ask
In a post on X on Wednesday, Cuban detailed five factors to consider before deciding whether to stay or leave a company:
- Is your company growing?
- As an employee, what are you doing and what can you do in the future to better contribute to these profits and goals?
- Are you intellectually stimulated in your work?
- Are you spending as much time as possible learning everything you can about AI?
- Does your CEO understand AI?
Expanding on the fifth question, Cuban said, "If the CEO has no idea, start thinking about another job. Your company will be challenged in the coming years."
The Importance of AI Literacy
Cuban also highlighted the importance of being literate in AI. He explained that if the company is growing and employees feel intellectually stimulated in their roles, they can leverage AI to contribute to that growth. "This means the company will need people like you. It has a very good chance of outperforming its competitors because it has an AI-literate workforce," Cuban added.
He clarified that AI is not easy to implement and is not a "magic solution that guarantees success," but rather a tool that can help "smart people make smarter decisions."
Cautions on Using AI
This is not the first time Cuban has offered career advice to workers on how to progress with AI. In December, he advised new graduates to prioritize working at small to medium-sized companies, where they could lead the deployment of AI agents, rather than at large companies that do not require this skill.
In April, he provided practical advice on prompts to use with Claude to enhance skills. The prompts were: "Tell me how to become an expert in creating agents for small businesses," "Create study guides that ask me questions," and "Correct me and adapt to my level of knowledge."
However, he also cautioned about AI, stating that individuals who use AI to cut corners and delegate their thinking will not progress. "I think right now we are bifurcating into two types of ways or two types of people using AI: those who use AI to learn nothing and those who use AI to learn everything," Cuban said during a conference in April.
