The Facebook Era: Unprecedented Data Sharing
Between 2007 and 2012, Facebook experienced explosive growth, attracting hundreds of millions of users. At that time, the platform appeared to be a harmless social space, encouraging users to share personal information such as their birth date, workplace, relationship status, and even their photos. This data quickly became the core of Facebook's strategy, transforming users into valuable resources for the platform. Not having a Facebook account often meant social exclusion, as membership had become the norm. In 2021, Facebook evolved into Meta, a name change that masked an even more extensive data collection.
A Digital Avatar of Zuckerberg: An Innovation in Testing
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is at the forefront of a new technological innovation. According to the Financial Times, Meta is working on a photorealistic digital avatar of Zuckerberg himself. This avatar is designed to mimic his speech patterns, tone, public statements, and recent thoughts on the company's strategies. The goal is to enable this avatar to engage in dialogue with employees, answer their questions, provide feedback, and enhance their sense of closeness to the founder.
Beyond a Simple Chatbot: A Broader Ambition
Zuckerberg is not settling for a simple chatbot. To understand Meta's ambition, one must look back to 2023, when the company introduced AI characters on Instagram and Facebook Messenger. These chatbots, equipped with simulated personalities, included celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton, as well as characters created by users via AI Studio. Although this project saw some success, Zuckerberg felt that the execution remained too basic. He drew inspiration from the success of Character AI, a platform popular among young people, which allows interactions with entities resembling real people.
Towards Advanced Personalization and Simulated Intimacy
The next step for Meta is to make these photorealistic characters credible enough for users to forget they are sharing their secrets with an advertising company. To achieve this goal, Meta has acquired two companies specializing in voice synthesis, PlayAI and WaveForms, and is working to reduce the computing power required for these avatars to respond instantly. Zuckerberg's AI clone could become the flagship product of this infrastructure. By using himself as the first use case, Zuckerberg hopes to demonstrate the commercial viability of this technology.
Meta-morphosis: A Disguised Restructuring?
To obtain a digital clone, users will need to share personal information such as their voice, photos, and public statements. Meta has not yet specified when this feature will be available, but its rollout will depend on the success of Zuckerberg's avatar. This initiative has raised concerns among employees, some fearing it may be a prelude to restructuring or even layoffs. Meta is already encouraging its employees to adopt AI-based tools and has recently imposed assessments to test their proficiency with these technologies.
Promises and Doubts
Meta has denied any connection between these technical assessments and potential layoffs. However, the company has made similar promises in the past, notably claiming that Facebook data would only be used to enhance user experience. These assurances have often been questioned, and many see this new initiative as a reflection of past practices. The creation of a digital avatar of Zuckerberg could indeed be a major technological advancement, but it also raises crucial questions about privacy and job security.
