Match Group Surveys American Singles' Opinions on AI in Dating
Match Group, a major player in the dating app industry with popular platforms like Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid, recently conducted a survey to understand American singles' feelings about the introduction of artificial intelligence in dating. This study reveals that many users are reluctant to see AI intrude into all aspects of their romantic lives.
AI, a Growing Trend in Dating Apps
In the online dating sector, the use of AI is on the rise. Bumble, for example, has launched a dating assistant called Bee, while Tinder is heavily investing in AI tools, to the extent that it has slowed down its hiring. Additionally, the former CEO of Hinge left his position to develop a dating app entirely based on AI.
Mixed Perceptions of AI in Romantic Relationships
Match's survey, which questioned 1,000 people aged 18 to 39, reveals that 47% of singles have a negative perception of using AI in romantic relationships. This opinion varies depending on the specific use of AI. For instance, about 40% of singles would be unwilling to date someone using an AI companion app. This figure rises to 51% among women aged 18 to 24.
The Use of AI Companion Apps Remains Limited
Despite these reservations, only 12% of young people aged 18 to 24 have used an AI companion app in the past three months. Among these users, about one-third reported seeking genuine connections through these chatbots.
Rejection of Relationships with AI, but Not Its Features
Although Match highlights an almost unanimous disapproval of the idea of dating an AI, akin to the film "Her," this does not mean that users reject all AI features in dating apps. Approximately 64% of respondents believe that AI could assist them in their dating journey, particularly in enhancing their profiles, selecting photos, or maintaining conversations.
AI as a Tool for Assistance Rather Than a Partner
Dating apps have long utilized matching algorithms, well before the advent of language models like GPT. However, Match's survey sheds light on the new wave of AI features that apps are introducing, aimed at assisting users without replacing the authenticity of human interactions.
User Expectations Regarding AI in Dating
Dating app developers must understand that users are not entirely opposed to AI, but they want it to remain a tool for assistance. Singles want AI to help them with the challenging aspects of dating while preserving the authenticity of human interactions.
A Clear Message for Dating Entrepreneurs
Match hopes this message will be heard by industry entrepreneurs, such as Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of Bumble, who proposed the idea of personal bots dating other bots. While meeting a partner online is now commonplace, the notion that "my bot asked your bot out" does not seem ready to become socially acceptable.
