Shadow Turns to AI to Boost European Businesses
Shadow is no longer limited to renting cloud PCs for gamers and creative minds. Within Synfonium, the company now aims to leverage its available GPU capabilities for professional uses related to AI.
Long associated with cloud gaming, Shadow is now looking to better utilize the computing power it already possesses. At the 2026 edition of VivaTech, the company, part of the Synfonium group alongside Qwant, presented a new phase of its development focused on European businesses and developers. The stated goal: to put its GPU infrastructure at the service of new professional and sovereign uses, particularly in artificial intelligence, without breaking away from its historical cloud computing activities.
Underutilized GPUs Redirected Towards AI Inference
Since 2016, Shadow has offered remote access to a powerful machine without the need to invest in a high-end computer. The service first gained recognition among gamers before gradually opening up to creatives and businesses, particularly for virtualized workstations and graphic uses. This trajectory has allowed it to build a GPU infrastructure hosted in Europe, designed for demanding interactive sessions but utilized very unevenly throughout the day.
On one hand, cloud gaming concentrates most usage peaks in the evening, from 6 PM to 11 PM, when gamers log in. On the other hand, professional uses tend to align more with office hours, without constantly mobilizing all available capacity. Shadow therefore wants to better occupy these less busy times by offering its GPU resources to businesses and developers who need computing power for their AI applications.
The targeted uses mainly involve inference, which means using pre-trained models. This includes, for example:
- Analyzing a query
- Processing a document
- Generating a result
- Producing a response in an artificial intelligence application
The load is lighter than training large models, but it still requires GPU resources as volumes increase.
Naturally, for Shadow, the calculation is straightforward. The GPUs are already there; it’s now about optimizing their profitability.
Reducing Dependence on a Service That Could Disappear Overnight
This direction aligns with the broader project of Synfonium, which also includes Qwant and Staan, its search API intended for businesses and alternative engines. For AI services, Staan must provide access to recent and usable web content, while Shadow supplies the necessary computing capacity to execute queries. The group aims to address multiple technical dependencies simultaneously, without reducing its sovereign discourse to a mere question of location.
These dependencies have already shown that they can quickly impact the services that rely on them. In 2025, Microsoft ended its Bing Search APIs, forcing affected clients, including Qwant, to migrate to other solutions. More recently, Anthropic disabled access to its most advanced models in the European Union at the decision of the Trump administration. In both cases, the lesson is the same for European businesses: an API, a model, or a computing resource can quickly slip away as soon as it depends on a provider subject to other industrial and/or political choices.
Thus, it is not just about choosing a local provider as a principle, but about limiting access disruptions to services that are now integral to business tools. Not (yet) a promise of total autonomy, but rather a way to build sustainable European alternatives, service by service.
