Superhuman, a company born from the acquisition of Superhuman by Grammarly, recently announced the acquisition of GPTZero, a startup specializing in the detection of AI-generated content. Founded three years ago by Edward Tian, a Princeton graduate, GPTZero quickly gained popularity with over 19 million registered users and an annual recurring revenue of $30 million.
Although the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, Edward Tian shared that the company was profitable as of 2024. Tian, alongside his co-founder and CTO Alex Cui, successfully raised a total of $13.5 million for GPTZero. This includes an initial funding round of $3.5 million led by Uncork Capital, followed by a $10 million Series A in June 2024, led by Nikhil Basu Trivedi of Footwork, with participation from investors such as Reach Capital, Jack Altman's Alt Capital, and Neo.
Superhuman, which had already integrated an AI detection tool into its platform, sees this acquisition as an opportunity to enhance its capabilities. GPTZero's mission has always been to help users, particularly students, identify and revise AI-generated content. Superhuman justifies this acquisition by stating that "two AI detectors are better than one," thus emphasizing the importance of combining the strengths of both technologies to provide an improved service to its users.
