Unreal Engine 6: Integrated AI Boosts Game Creation
Are you interested in games that come out much faster? Unreal Engine 6, the future creation engine from Epic Games, will assist developers with an integrated artificial intelligence model to enhance productivity. Epic Games took the opportunity of the launch of the latest major update of Unreal Engine 5 to unveil the outlines of Unreal Engine 6, the next version of its creation engine. Information had already been shared a few weeks earlier, alongside the announcement of the overhaul of Rocket League.
A Fusion of AI-Powered Tools
According to Epic, Unreal Engine 6 will be designed by combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite. The stated goals are twofold:
- To enable the creation of complete games.
- To facilitate the management of large-scale live titles, whether it involves publishing content in proprietary ecosystems or directly in Fortnite.
The integration of generative AI plays a significant role in the vision put forth by Epic Games. The company states that large language models (LLMs), as well as tools like Claude or Codex, will have "a central role" in the engine. The idea is to help developers produce content more quickly without taking away their creative control, according to the company.
Changes in Programming
Among the other announced developments, Epic plans to migrate the programming model to Verse, a language derived from C++. This transition aims to make development more accessible and better support persistent experiences involving a large number of contributors.
The company also aims to promote the portability of content, code, and virtual economies across different games, ecosystems, and engines through open standards. An objective that, according to Epic, would allow for collaboration among developers on an unprecedented scale.
A Multi-Year Release
Epic aims for an early access launch of Unreal Engine 6 by late 2027, with a full version expected to follow between twelve and eighteen months later, around 2029.
In the meantime, version 5.8 of Unreal Engine, released today, brings improvements in performance, customization, and the fluidity of development processes. Epic has specified that this will be the last major update for version 5 before the team fully focuses on the development of Unreal Engine 6.
