A Revolution for Siri at WWDC 2026
At the annual developer conference, WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled a revolutionary version of its voice assistant, Siri. This new avatar, powered by Google's Gemini models, promises to transform Siri into a true autonomous agent capable of proactively interacting with the user's applications. This announcement marks a significant turning point for Apple, which is seeking to catch up in the field of artificial intelligence.
After an initial unsuccessful attempt, Apple is back on the scene with a new approach to AI. On June 8, during WWDC 2026, the company revealed an advanced version of Siri, now capable of acting directly on users' devices. This evolution, although late, is a direct response to competition and serves as the centerpiece of Apple's announcements regarding technological innovation.
Siri Transforms into an Intelligent Agent
Renamed Siri AI, Apple's assistant is reinventing itself to offer much more advanced features. Unlike its predecessor, which was limited to executing simple commands, Siri AI is built on four technological pillars that grant it true autonomy:
- A deep understanding of personal context, including analysis of photos, messages, emails, and locally stored notes.
- Awareness of what is displayed on the device's screen.
- Access to the web for obtaining updated information.
- App actions, which allow Siri to interact with application tools to accomplish complex tasks.
These capabilities are orchestrated by a central system that coordinates Siri's actions, transforming the assistant into a true agent capable of acting rather than merely responding.
In demonstrations, Siri AI showcased its ability to perform complex action sequences on the iPhone. For example, it can identify a location from a photo, cross-reference this information with contact data in messages, and generate a route with a stopover, all without user intervention. While promising, this feature will need to prove its effectiveness in real-world conditions to compete with solutions like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
To illustrate this change, Apple introduced a dedicated Siri app, designed as a conversational chatbot. This app allows users to revisit past conversations, similar to what competitors already offer. Siri AI also integrates sophisticated writing tools that can adapt to the user's tone depending on the interlocutor, as well as more accurate voice dictation. These innovations will be gradually rolled out across all Apple devices, including the iPhone, Mac, watch, and Vision Pro headset. On macOS, Siri will even be able to analyze local files using RAG technology.
However, Siri AI will not be immediately available on iOS and iPadOS in Europe. Apple is seeking to comply with DMA and AI Act regulations, which is delaying its launch. China is also excluded for the time being. A beta version will be offered in the rest of the world later this year.
Apple Intelligence: Contextual AI Based on Gemini
The operation of Siri AI relies on a new architecture called Apple Intelligence, developed in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. This system uses a distilled model of Gemini, functioning both on-device and via Private Cloud Compute, Apple's secure infrastructure launched in 2024. This technology ensures that user data is neither stored nor accessible, even by Apple.
Apple Intelligence brings significant improvements to all native applications. For example, Safari can now organize tabs by themes and create extensions from simple descriptions. The Passwords app can automatically navigate websites to change compromised passwords. The Phone app can display relevant information during a call, such as a confirmation code received via email. Routines in Shortcuts can be created in natural language, and the Photos app benefits from innovative spatial cropping that allows users to modify the viewpoint after taking a shot, as well as generative filling.
Some of these features will be limited by daily quotas, and expanded access will require an iCloud+ subscription.
A Tempting Promise on Paper
On paper, Apple's announcements are promising. The Cupertino company partially acknowledges its delay and claims to have taken the time to design a truly useful AI, focused on the real needs of users. The new features presented paint a picture of an ideal personal AI: an assistant that understands the user's context, acts within their applications, and follows them from device to device. Although less autonomous than solutions like OpenClaw or Hermes, this personal agent is designed to seamlessly integrate into users' daily lives.
At the same time, Apple reaffirms its commitment to privacy, a fundamental principle for the company for years. This stance contrasts with that of many market players who heavily exploit data. However, it is ironic to note that Apple relies on technology from Google, a company whose business model is based on data exploitation, to catch up in AI.
The deployment timeline remains uncertain, with availability announced "later this year." Apple has often been criticized for announcing innovations before making them available, and the promise for 2024 has yet to be fulfilled. This time, the company seems better equipped to realize its ambitions, but only successful implementation can confirm these hopes.
