Amazon Relaunches Smartphone Challenge with Alexa and AI in the Spotlight
Twelve years after the resounding failure of the Fire Phone, Amazon appears ready to venture back into the smartphone market. According to information reported by Reuters, the e-commerce giant is working on a new phone model, currently known by the code name "Transformer." This project would prominently feature the voice assistant Alexa, which would play a central role in the user experience of this future device.
In 2014, Amazon made its first foray into the smartphone world with the Fire Phone. Priced attractively at under $200, it quickly disappeared from shelves. One of the main reasons for this failure was a very limited app catalog, which hindered its adoption by consumers. Today, Amazon seems determined to avoid this pitfall by leveraging artificial intelligence to stand out from traditional app stores.
The Fire Phone did have innovative features for its time, such as glasses-free 3D display and an app called Firefly, capable of recognizing objects and products through the phone's camera. Despite these innovations and a price of $199 without a subscription, the phone never managed to attract a wide audience. Production was halted shortly after its launch due to disappointing sales.
One of the major weaknesses of the Fire Phone lay in its app ecosystem. The phone relied on the Amazon Appstore, which could not compete with the richness of the Google Play Store. This limitation was a significant barrier to the Fire Phone's adoption by users, who turned to more comprehensive offerings.
A Smartphone Centered on Alexa and Artificial Intelligence
Amazon's "Transformer" project would primarily revolve around Alexa. According to the Reuters report, the goal is to create a device that seamlessly integrates with Amazon services such as Prime Video, Prime Music, Grubhub, and of course, the online shopping platform.
This new smartphone would be designed to adapt to daily usage, closely linked with Alexa's home voice assistants. Artificial intelligence would play a crucial role, with the ambition of reducing or even replacing reliance on traditional app stores. Alexa would be a central feature of the future device, although it is not intended to become the phone's operating system. This approach marks a departure from the Fire Phone, which suffered from a too-restricted app ecosystem.
It is important to note that this project remains uncertain for now and could be abandoned at any moment. Industry observers will therefore closely monitor the evolution of this ambitious project.
