1Password and Claude: Secure Task Automation
1Password has launched a new browser integration allowing Claude, the chatbot from Anthropic, to access stored security credentials such as usernames and passwords. The 1Password for Claude feature enables users to authorize Claude to perform multi-step tasks, such as booking travel and managing online accounts, without having to manually enter their login credentials, while protecting the security information from Anthropic's AI models, according to 1Password.
This is made possible by a new zero exposure security framework developed by 1Password, which works by injecting the necessary credentials for each task through a secure channel that the Claude agent cannot see. Thus, while the AI may be granted permission to use your stored details, it cannot actually see your passwords or one-time codes for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Access to Claude is granted on a per-task basis, and 1Password states that its users can approve or deny each request with a single biometric prompt. This still interrupts the workflow, but it is less cumbersome than having to temporarily take control to log into accounts. As a precaution, 1Password also claims that it scans the page after each autofill to ensure that no information in form submissions remains exposed before handing control back to Claude.
"At the moment an AI agent takes control of the browser, 1Password automatically locks itself, limiting access only to the credentials explicitly granted for the current task," 1Password said in its press release. "Nothing else in the 1Password vault is accessible."
1Password for Claude is now available for 1Password users on Mac, as part of professional, family, and individual plans. The 1Password desktop app and browser extensions are required to use this feature, as well as the Claude desktop app and its browser extensions.
You can store a wide variety of security information in 1Password vaults, including passwords, access keys, 2FA codes, API tokens, and personal information like your address and financial details. 1Password does not specify which credentials Claude will be able to access, but it seems that this is currently limited to login-related details — the company indicates that support for payment cards and identity information will be available after launch.
