1Password and Claude: AI Accesses Your Accounts Without Passwords
1Password is launching an integration with Claude that allows AI to connect to your accounts without ever accessing your passwords. This secure injection mechanism addresses one of the most challenging questions for autonomous agents.
Delegating a task to an AI agent often encounters the same obstacle: most useful online activities are protected by a login. As a result, you either entrust your credentials to the AI or take control at every step. 1Password has proposed a third way with its Claude integration, available starting today on Mac: allowing the agent to connect to your accounts without the password ever crossing the model's barrier. This technical distinction is not just a marketing argument and deserves attention.
Claude Gains Access, Not the Key
The principle is based on what 1Password calls a “zero-exposure security framework.” Specifically, when Claude needs to log into a site to complete a task, it requests access to the corresponding identifier. The user validates via a biometric prompt, and 1Password directly injects the credentials into the target page through a secure channel. The password and 2FA code never transit through the model's context, memory, or Anthropic servers.
This is not just a matter of trust in Anthropic: it is a structural protection. A Chrome extension linked to Claude had already demonstrated that exposure vectors are numerous and sometimes unintentional. If the model never sees the secret, it cannot leak it. Access is also strictly limited: it pertains only to identifiers explicitly approved for the current task, expires at the end of the session, and provides no residual access to the vault.
The Agentic Mode Locks What Claude Should Not Touch
The launch comes with a distinct feature: the Agentic Mode, available for all 1Password users. As soon as a compatible agent takes control of the browser, the extension automatically locks the vault. Only the data explicitly granted for the current task remains accessible. Nothing else in the vault is reachable, and the user can see the mode's status directly in the extension, with the option to interrupt it at any time.
1Password also scans the page after each autofill to ensure that no sensitive values linger in a form before handing control back to the agent. This is not superfluous: a form that fails submission can leave pre-filled fields visible. This automatic safeguard at launch is clearly the right decision, knowing that Claude now controls your computer for increasingly complex tasks, and exposure surfaces multiply with autonomy.
For now, the integration is limited to login credentials on Mac, with support for credit cards and identity data announced for later. 1Password says it aims to extend the Agentic Mode to other AI agents “as the ecosystem grows,” a phrase suggesting that the partnership with Anthropic is just a first milestone. The open question remains: will users be willing to trust this mechanism for their most sensitive accesses, such as banking or billing tools, or will they prefer to maintain control over those connections, even at the cost of limiting the agent's autonomy?
