The New Agentic Mode of 1Password

Claude connects to your accounts without seeing your credentials

1Password has taken a bold initiative to tackle one of the major challenges of artificial intelligence: ensuring secure logins. Through an innovative integration with Claude, 1Password allows it to manage passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes without these details being visible to Anthropic or the AI model itself.

Using Claude

While exploring the capabilities of Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work, I discovered significant opportunities to save time. Although these AI agents cannot yet handle all tasks, some, particularly tedious ones, can be effectively delegated to these digital assistants.

However, a large part of my online activities, especially those involving administrative operations, require a secure connection. Whether it's managing payments via Stripe, accessing my web hosting provider, or using my accounting system, everything is protected by robust login systems.

The 1Password Solution

1Password has announced a new feature that allows Claude to request access to various services through 1Password. The key concept is that Claude never directly sees the password. Instead, Claude requests a password, 1Password generates an authorization sheet that requires approval, and then the credentials are automatically filled in on the target site, without Claude having access to the passwords or authentication codes.

Usage Examples

• A manager uses Claude via 1Password to analyze Stripe transactions for warning signals.
• An Audible user employs Claude via 1Password to search for audiobooks to listen to.

Concerns About Repeated Access

I had reservations about the possibility of unauthorized repeated access, so I questioned the company about its security measures. 1Password has designed its system so that each access is limited to a specific session and task, with no automatic extension. There is no permanent access.

When Claude needs an identifier, it must request access for each task. The user must approve this request, which can be done via biometric verification, a password, or Touch ID. While YubiKey is generally supported by 1Password, it is not yet available for this application, but that is planned.

Task Completion

At the end of each task, the authorization expires. If the agent wants to access Stripe again, it cannot reuse a previous authorization. It must request access again, and the user must approve once more.

Agentic Mode

Technically, this access is supported by the new Agentic mode of 1Password, which automatically activates as soon as a recognized AI agent takes control of the browser. When Agentic mode is active, the agent can only access the credentials specifically granted for the current task. No other password stored in the vault is accessible via the browser.

1Password clarified that granting access for a one-time verification in Stripe does not open access to the entire vault. It opens a window for a specific task, and 1Password closes it once the task is completed. Throughout this task, Claude never sees the identifier itself. The password and one-time MFA code are directly injected into the page by 1Password through a secure channel, out of the agent's view.

Availability

According to the company, Agentic mode will be available to all 1Password users starting today. Credential controls will be available from day one, while future support for payment cards and identity details in 1Password will be available after the launch.

Agentic mode activates automatically and operates discreetly in the background. Users can see when it is active directly in the 1Password browser extension, with the option to cancel it at any time. From Claude, the underlying framework is designed to extend to any agent or browser-based platform as the ecosystem develops.
