ADT, the leader in home security, announced on Wednesday the launch of its new DIY security product line, called ADT Blu. This initiative aims to provide consumers with security solutions without the usual constraints of professional installations and long-term contracts. The ADT Blu system will work with the latest version of ADT's app, ADT Plus.
Consumers can choose from several packages, such as the Security Starter Kit for $249 and the Outdoor Video Kit for $389, depending on their specific needs. While these kits include options for professional monitoring, there is no subscription required to use the system or receive alerts via the ADT Plus app.
The devices offered in the Blu range include access sensors, motion sensors, indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It is worth noting that some Blu purchases require a one-month monitoring plan at $10, but this plan can be canceled afterward.
A Confusing Past of DIY Products
ADT has previously attempted to launch several DIY product lines, but this often led to confusion among consumers. For example, the Blue by ADT line was discontinued, yet its support pages are still accessible, which can confuse new customers. The current rebranding under the name Blu, with its various packages and options, does not help clarify the situation.
New Features and Limitations
ADT's Blu devices include easy-to-install sensors, similar to previous models, but with notable improvements. The ADT Plus app allows for advanced customization of security settings, including geofencing and alerts.
ADT has also introduced new products, such as a doorbell camera and an outdoor camera, replacing its partnership with Google Nest, which ended earlier this year. This break means that certain AI features, such as facial recognition, are no longer available. However, ADT promises AI video capabilities, although details remain vague. The doorbell camera, for instance, is capable of detecting people, animals, vehicles, and packages, features that were already available before the current AI craze. These detection capabilities are offered for free rather than as a subscription.
An ADT representative has not yet provided additional comments on these new offerings.
