Agile Robots and Google DeepMind Join Forces
Agile Robots, a robotics company based in Munich, recently announced a strategic partnership with Google DeepMind, the renowned artificial intelligence research lab. This collaboration aims to integrate Google DeepMind's Gemini foundational models into Agile Robots' robotic solutions. By joining other robotics companies in this endeavor, Agile Robots hopes to enhance its technological capabilities.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting that this partnership would not only facilitate the integration of the Gemini models but also leverage data collected by Agile Robots' robots to improve the underlying AI models. The two companies will work together to test, refine, and deploy these robots across various industrial sectors, including electronics manufacturing, automotive, data centers, and logistics.
A Global Presence and High Ambitions
Zhaopeng Chen, co-founder and CEO of Agile Robots, stated that the company has already installed over 20,000 robotic solutions worldwide. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to transform entire industries through autonomous and intelligent production systems. According to him, the integration of Google DeepMind's Gemini robotics models positions Agile Robots at the forefront of this rapidly growing market.
A company spokesperson mentioned that this agreement is designed for the long term, although details regarding its duration or cost have not been disclosed.
Strong Financial Backing
Founded in 2018, Agile Robots has raised over $270 million in venture capital funding. Its investors include giants such as the SoftBank Vision Fund, Chinese hardware company Xiaomi, and Midas Group. This financial support reflects market confidence in the company's potential and its ability to innovate in the field of robotics.
A Growing Trend in the Industry
Agile Robots is not the only company partnering with Google DeepMind. Earlier this year, Boston Dynamics, owned by Hyundai and the maker of the famous Spot robot, also announced a partnership with Google DeepMind. This partnership aims to utilize Google’s foundational AI models for the development of its future humanoid robot, Atlas. Boston Dynamics was previously owned by Google from 2013 to 2017.
In general, partnerships in the robotics field are on the rise this year. For example, the German startup Neura Robotics announced a partnership with Qualcomm in early March. This agreement involves Neura Robotics using Qualcomm's new IQ10 processor series, designed for mobile and humanoid robots, as a reference for future robots.
Modern robots are incredibly complex, both in hardware and software, making these partnerships very logical. As companies strive to develop robots capable of operating autonomously, it makes sense for firms with specific expertise to partner with others possessing complementary skills.
As many industry players, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, view physical AI as the next frontier for the AI market, these partnerships are likely to continue multiplying and accelerating.
