YouTube and the Era of AI Avatars

YouTube, the well-known online video platform, continues to surprise its users with technological innovations. While 90-second ads are already testing users' patience, YouTube is not stopping there and is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into its services. This time, it's for better or for worse.

A few months ago, YouTube Music made headlines by testing an AI capable of acting as a radio host. Today, it's YouTube Shorts' turn to embrace this technology. Content creators can now generate ultra-realistic avatars of themselves. These avatars, which can be integrated into videos, are not only visually faithful to their model but also reproduce their voice with astonishing accuracy.

Gradual Rollout of the Feature

This new feature, announced by YouTube earlier this year, is being gradually rolled out in several countries. According to reports from 9to5Google, it is already available in the United States. However, users in France and the rest of Europe will have to wait a bit longer before they can take advantage of it.

To create their own AI avatar, users must go to the YouTube app or use YouTube Create. They can then take an "animated selfie" and record their face and voice by following a few instructions. In just a few seconds, a photorealistic avatar is generated. Even better, this avatar can be inserted directly into Shorts. Each generated clip can last up to 8 seconds, but multiple clips can be created in succession to make a longer video. Once the avatar is set up, users can update it at any time.

An Innovation in Line with Google Veo Models

This feature is in line with the Google Veo models integrated into YouTube Shorts. Although a similar feature allowing users to add a photo has been available since last year, the addition of voice is a game changer.

For YouTube, this innovation offers users a new way to include themselves in videos. The animated selfie, combined with voice, is exclusively intended for creating a personal avatar. No one other than the user can use it to create a new Short. Users also have the option to delete their avatar at any time. If an avatar is not used for three years, it will be automatically deleted. However, existing videos using that avatar will remain online unless the original clip is deleted.

Transparency and Security Measures

To ensure transparency, all videos using these AI-generated avatars will be accompanied by a watermark and a warning. These measures aim to inform viewers that the content has been modified using AI, thereby highlighting the issues related to content authenticity and the potential risks of misinformation.
