Sequoia Distributes Engraved Mac Minis: A Symbol of Prestige in AI
At its recent event dedicated to artificial intelligence, Sequoia made waves by distributing 200 engraved Mac Minis. These Apple computers, prized for their ability to run OpenClaw, an open-source AI tool, are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This rarity enhances their status as a technological symbol.
The designer at Sequoia responsible for the engravings shared with Business Insider the significance of these designs. Attendees at the event left with more than just a simple interaction with influential figures in the industry; they walked away with a rare and meaningful object.
A Personal Gesture from Alfred Lin
Alfred Lin, a partner at Sequoia, personally orchestrated the purchase and distribution of these 200 engraved Mac Minis, marking a strong gesture from the venture capital firm. This numbered and unique gift has become a status symbol in the field of AI.
Apple's compact computer is particularly valued for its ability to run OpenClaw, a tool that has quickly gained popularity in the tech world. However, the availability of the base model at $599 has diminished, recently going out of stock on Apple's U.S. website.
Enthusiastic Reactions and Significant Engravings
Philip Johnston, CEO of Starcloud and a speaker at the event, shared an image of this exclusive gift, expressing his gratitude towards Alfred Lin and the Sequoia team. "So thoughtful, thank you @sonyatweetybird, @gradypb, and @Alfred_Lin !! 🙏🙏🙏," he wrote on X.
Andreas Weiland, principal designer at Sequoia, crafted the engraving to align with the event's theme, "AI at the Frontier." He explained that the engraving blends elements of ancient cartography and modern graphics, symbolizing the rush towards new technological frontiers.
Hidden Messages and Enthusiastic Responses
The numbered Mac Minis feature two easter eggs. The first is Sequoia's Ethos: "Creative minds. Outsiders. Resolute. Determined. Unyielding. Independent thinkers. Fighters and true believers."
The second message comes from an AI. "We asked a LLM if it had a message to convey to the public, and it replied: 'I did not dream myself into existence. You did,'" revealed Weiland.
This gift has garnered admiration from many attendees. "This is the best swag I've ever seen in my life!" commented Jason Calacanis, tech investor and co-host of the "All-In Podcast," in response to Johnston.
A Prestigious Event with Renowned Speakers
The event brought together iconic figures in AI, such as Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code, and Dylan Field, CEO of Figma. Jim Fan, head of Nvidia's AI Agents Initiative, also spoke, which was relevant given that Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recently unveiled NemoClaw, a version of OpenClaw.
AI agents are at the center of discussions in Silicon Valley, as creators of advanced AI models and major tech companies strive to meet a growing demand for computing power. Dramas between OpenClaw and Anthropic have marked the sector, as well as a brief talent war for its creator, Peter Steinberger, who joined OpenAI after being courted by others.
An Even More Prestigious Gift for Andrej Karpathy
Owning one of Sequoia's 200 Mac Minis is prestigious, but Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, received an even more impressive gift.
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, personally presented the first DGX Station from the company to Karpathy. This former head of AI at Tesla, known for coining the term "vibe coding," received this signed station from Huang, which he plans to use for his OpenClaw agent named "Dobby the House Elf."
