Amazon Unveils Alexa+ in France with Mistral AI

Amazon has chosen Paris to present Alexa+, its new version of the voice assistant specifically designed for the French market. This launch is based on a strategic partnership with Mistral AI, a collaboration aimed at providing an enriched user experience tailored to French cultural specifics. Alexa+ is now available for free in preview starting today, allowing users to explore its new features, such as smart home management and culinary interactions with Marmiton.

A Redesign for the French Audience

After deploying Alexa+ in several European languages, Amazon is finally introducing this version in France. This initiative is part of an extensive localization strategy made possible through the alliance with Mistral AI. The goal is to transform Alexa into an assistant capable of taking concrete actions, rather than just responding. This redesign marks a turning point in how voice assistants can interact with users, focusing on tangible actions.

Mistral AI: A Cultural Integration

Amazon has identified that 76% of expected interactions with a voice assistant require a real action. This is where Mistral AI comes in, enabling Alexa+ to overcome the limitations of traditional AIs often trained on English-language data. During the event, Pierre Stock, VP of Science Operations at Mistral AI, emphasized the importance of ensuring a nuanced understanding of spoken French, including its subtleties and humor. Amazon uses around 70 different language models to manage task complexity, thus ensuring a more natural and effective interaction.

Demonstrations Focused on Daily Use

During the presentation, Amazon showcased domestic use scenarios, illustrating how Alexa+ can simplify daily life. For example, the assistant can activate a fan simply by responding to a user's expressed feeling of heat, or play music throughout the house upon request. A specific demonstration showed how a user could, in just a few phrases, add turning on her lights and starting her popcorn machine as soon as she begins playing a movie. Although some latencies remain, the demonstrated features are promising.

Setting up connected devices is also simplified. Alexa+ automatically recognizes compatible equipment, including those using the Matter standard. On Echo Show devices, the built-in camera allows the assistant to analyze objects or clothing to provide tailored responses.

Availability and Business Model

Alexa+ is now available on Echo and Fire TV devices. Browser access is planned for this summer, allowing for continuity of use across different devices. This approach aims to create an ambient AI, accessible anywhere and anytime. Early access is free starting today by signing up on the website, after which the service will be charged €22.99 per month. However, Prime subscribers in France will benefit from this service at no additional cost, a strategy aimed at facilitating adoption.

Amazon's Ambitions

Clément Monjou, director of Alexa France, confirmed the integration of Alexa+ into the Amazon Prime offering. With millions of devices already installed in French households, Amazon hopes to persuade users to abandon other voice assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude in favor of Alexa. This move underscores Amazon's commitment to establishing itself in the French market by offering an AI that not only understands but also adapts to local specifics.
