Alexa Joins the Amazon Shopping Experience
Amazon has recently integrated its voice assistant, Alexa, directly into the shopping experience on its website and mobile app. Now, when users enter a query on Amazon, they interact with Alexa for Shopping, a new assistant powered by Alexa Plus. This service replaces the former shopping assistant, Rufus, and is prominently featured on the Amazon app and website.
When a user searches for a product like "toilet paper," they will receive the usual list of brands. However, more complex questions such as "What is a good skincare routine for men?" or "When did I last order AA batteries?" will now trigger a response from Alexa.
Features of Alexa for Shopping
The capabilities of Alexa for Shopping include setting up price alerts, comparing items, and automatically ordering products. For example, it can add a product to your cart if its price drops below a threshold you have set. Additionally, the assistant can search for products on other sites through the Buy for Me feature, track price history over a year, and search for deals via scheduled actions. These features are available to all Amazon customers in the United States, without requiring an Alexa account.
The responses generated by Alexa for Shopping will be more comprehensive than those currently obtained by entering a query on Amazon. If you are considering a specific purchase, the assistant can create a shopping guide comparing features, prices, and reviews on Amazon and the web, based on what matters most to you.
In addition to the main search bar, Alexa for Shopping will also be available in a dedicated chat window, providing an even smoother interaction with the assistant.
Key Differences from Rufus
While Alexa for Shopping is an evolution of Rufus, it stands out due to deeper integration and enhanced capabilities. Accessible on all Amazon and Alexa devices, it offers continuity across devices and uses advanced models to respond to user inquiries. Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo, emphasized that the assistant can pull data from across the web to provide accurate and personalized responses.
Personalized Experience and Improvements on Echo Show
Users of Echo or Show devices will benefit from a more personalized experience. For instance, if you discussed a science project with Alexa Plus on a smart speaker, Alexa for Shopping will remember that conversation to help you purchase the necessary products on Amazon.com. The shopping experience on Echo Show devices has also been enhanced, with an integrated interface allowing for both voice and touch interactions.
A new "fully integrated visual shopping experience" is now available on the Echo Show 15 and 21, and will soon be accessible on the Show 8 and 11. Until now, the shopping experience on Show devices was limited and primarily voice-focused. Now, it will feature a complete Amazon store interface, allowing users to utilize both voice commands and touch interactions on the smart screen to navigate the store. You will be able to adjust settings such as Subscribe and Save, change payment methods or delivery addresses for a purchase, and filter product views by specific features using both modalities.
Alexa for Shopping is accessible on mobile, desktop, and Echo Show devices, providing flexibility across different platforms.
Conclusion
While Google and OpenAI have attempted to integrate chatbots into the shopping process with varying results, Alexa Plus appears better positioned to offer a comprehensive shopping experience. However, this requires users to share a significant amount of personal data, which could pose a challenge in a context of growing distrust towards AI.
