Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, has decided to prohibit its employees from using the programming tool Claude Code, developed by Anthropic. This ban will take effect from July 10, according to several recent reports.
Anthropic, which has already implemented restrictions to prevent Chinese companies and their foreign subsidiaries from accessing its models, has worked to close loopholes that allowed Chinese users to utilize Claude. A version of Claude Code has been developed to discreetly identify Chinese users. This measure aimed to prevent account abuse by unauthorized resellers and to protect against distillation, a practice where AI models are trained on the outputs of other models.
Thariq Shihipar from Anthropic explained on X that this version was an experiment launched in March. He noted that more robust mitigation measures have been put in place since then, and the company had planned to remove this feature for some time.
Despite these measures, Alibaba has classified Claude Code as high-risk software and has advised its employees to turn to Qoder, the company's internal programming tool.
