Jensen Huang and the Future of Employment in the Age of AI
During a recent discussion hosted by the Milken Institute, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, addressed the impact of artificial intelligence on employment in the United States. In conversation with Becky Quick from MSNBC, Huang argued that AI does not pose a threat to workers but rather presents an opportunity to create a large number of jobs.
Various topics were discussed during this conversation, but a central concern emerged: the persistent economic anxiety related to the AI industry and whether this should genuinely worry Americans. Quick emphasized, “This is happening so quickly. Is there a greater dislocation than we’ve seen in the past, leading to greater inequality? And what should we do about it?”
An Optimistic Vision for the American Industry
Huang stressed the potential of AI to drive the reindustrialization of the United States. According to him, AI represents the best opportunity for the U.S. to reindustrialize. The AI industry, supported by a new generation of industrial plants, requires a significant workforce to produce the essential hardware for its infrastructure. He pointed out that automating a task does not necessarily mean the disappearance of a job, as employees' roles are often broader than the specific tasks they perform. Huang explained that even when AI takes over a specific task within a role, the broader function that employee fulfills within an organization is likely to remain. Huang stated that those who believe that automating a task means the disappearance of a job misunderstand that the purpose of a job and the task of a job are related but not identical.
Critique of Alarmist Rhetoric
Huang also criticized the tendency to portray AI as an apocalyptic threat to humanity. He expressed concern about the effect of these science fiction narratives on public opinion, fearing they might deter people from engaging with AI. Huang criticized those who claim that AI will dominate humanity or eliminate vast sectors of the economy. He noted that this exaggeration is often used by the industry itself as a marketing tool to generate interest around products that do not always meet the expectations created.
Uncertain Economic Prospects
Despite Huang's optimism, studies conducted by financial and academic organizations estimate that around 15% of jobs in the United States could disappear in the coming years due to AI. The long-term impact of this technology on the economy remains uncertain, although Huang continues to promote a positive vision of its potential.
