A Massive and Accidental Deletion on GitHub
Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence, has recently found itself at the center of a controversy after accidentally deleting thousands of code repositories on GitHub. This unintentional action occurred while the company was attempting to remove unauthorized copies of its source code that had been leaked online.
The Unexpected Disclosure of Source Code
The incident was discovered on Tuesday by a software engineer. He found that Anthropic had inadvertently included access to the source code of its command-line application, known as Claude Code, in a recent update. Claude Code is recognized as a leader in its field, and its leak has sparked significant curiosity among artificial intelligence enthusiasts. They analyzed the code to understand how the LLM powering the application works, sharing their findings on GitHub.
A Quick but Excessive Reaction
In response to this leak, Anthropic issued a takedown notice under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This notice requested that GitHub remove all repositories containing the leaked code. According to GitHub's records, approximately 8,100 repositories were affected by this request, including legitimate forks of Anthropic's public Claude Code repository. This action provoked outrage among many users on social media, whose code was blocked without valid reason.
A Partial Correction
Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code at Anthropic, explained that this massive deletion was accidental. The company has since rescinded the majority of the takedown notices, maintaining them only for one specific repository and 96 forks that actually contained the leaked source code.
A spokesperson for Anthropic told TechCrunch that the repository mentioned in the notice was part of a network of forks related to their own public Claude Code repository. This led to a broader deletion than intended. The company has therefore lifted the notice for all repositories except for the specifically named one, and GitHub has restored access to the affected forks.
A Setback Amid IPO Preparations
This incident comes at a delicate time for Anthropic, which is apparently considering an initial public offering (IPO). Such a project typically requires rigorous management of execution and compliance. The leak of their source code could potentially lead to lawsuits from shareholders, further complicating their future plans.
