Anthropic, a startup valued at $380 billion, held a two-day summit at the end of March, bringing together around 15 Christian leaders. These participants, from Catholic and Protestant churches, academia, and the business sector, were invited to discuss the moral and spiritual behavior of Claude, the chatbot developed by the company.
According to the Washington Post, Anthropic was seeking guidance on how to manage Claude's moral and spiritual behavior. Among the topics discussed were how Claude should respond to users who are grieving or in distress, as well as the question of whether an artificial intelligence could be perceived as a "child of God." Figures such as Brendan McGuire, a Catholic priest from Silicon Valley, and Meghan Sullivan, a professor at the University of Notre Dame, expressed their belief that Anthropic's interest in these issues was sincere. McGuire stated, "They are developing something for which they do not yet know exactly what it will yield."
This summit illustrates Anthropic's tendency to view AI models as more than just simple technologies. This approach is not isolated, as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has also used spiritual metaphors to describe AI development, speaking of "magical intelligence in the sky" and claiming to be "on the side of angels."
