American Companies and the Rise of Anthropic

In the United States, companies looking to integrate artificial intelligence into their operations have often favored OpenAI. However, Anthropic, a competing firm, has recently seen a significant increase in its AI spending. This trend was highlighted by the Ramp index, a company specializing in corporate card issuance and financial automation. Anthropic has also benefited from an unexpected boost to its reputation after contesting a contract with the Pentagon.

Increasingly Tight Competition

According to the latest data, Anthropic is on the verge of surpassing OpenAI in terms of corporate spending on AI. Ramp revealed that half of its clients are now investing in AI products. Among these clients, 30.6% have chosen Anthropic, marking a 6.3% increase since March. The gap with OpenAI, which holds 35.2% of clients, has significantly narrowed, indicating a potential shift in corporate preferences.

"If this trend continues, Anthropic could surpass OpenAI in the next two months," a Ramp spokesperson told Business Insider. Anthropic is already leading among early adopters, particularly those backed by venture capitalists, and in key sectors such as software, finance, and professional services.

Anthropic's Sector Dominance

Currently, Anthropic outperforms OpenAI in three specific sectors: information, finance and insurance, as well as personal services. While Ramp's data is just a snapshot of client spending, it provides valuable insight into the evolving adoption of AI by businesses. Advances in AI are beginning to transform several industries, with giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Visa encouraging their employees to integrate this technology into their daily work.

The Success of Claude Code

Anthropic's Claude Code has met with resounding success among software engineers and developers, likely serving as one of the main drivers of corporate spending on the startup's technology. The company also offers high-performing models, according to benchmarking specialist Arena.ai, which likely influences companies' choices of AI technologies.

The Importance of Funding in AI Adoption

Ramp's data indicates that funding plays a crucial role in companies' adoption of AI. Those backed by venture capitalists show an adoption rate of 80%, while those supported by private equity firms have a 64% adoption rate. Companies without any financial backing display a 45% adoption rate.

An Unexpected Boost for Anthropic

Although Ramp did not specify the exact reasons for Anthropic's rise, the company received a reputation boost in February when it contested a contract with the Pentagon. That month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged the company to accept the military's terms of use for Claude or face being blacklisted by the government.

Anthropic refused, leading President Donald Trump to call for federal agencies to stop using the technology, and the Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. OpenAI stepped in to offer its services to the Department of Defense.

In response, some users rallied around Anthropic. Claude temporarily surpassed ChatGPT on the App Store, and major tech companies like Microsoft showed their support.
