A Controversial Code Review Tool
Anthropic has recently introduced Code Review, an artificial intelligence tool designed to identify and fix complex issues in code. However, this innovation has not been received without reservations. Developers have expressed concerns on social media, particularly on X, regarding the high cost of this tool, which could range between $15 and $25 per code review. This pricing is seen as a barrier, especially for smaller organizations.
The tool, which optimizes for depth, is considered more expensive than other lighter solutions, such as the Claude Code GitHub Action integration. The latter allows developers to review code directly on GitHub, a well-known platform for collaboration and code storage. Anthropic clarified that the costs are related to token usage, which fuels the criticism.
Criticism on Effectiveness and Cost
Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, defended the tool by highlighting its ability to detect more difficult bugs. However, developers like Daniel Ávila from the fintech Hedgineer expressed skepticism about the improvements promised by Code Review. Ávila noted the lack of additional features compared to GitHub Actions, aside from direct configuration in Claude Desktop.
Other voices, such as Jean P.D. Meijer, founder of a software startup, questioned the economic logic of the tool. Meijer compared the cost of a review to that of an unlimited subscription to other code review applications, wondering about the absence of subsidies for tokens.
A Context of Rising Costs for AI Tools
The debate surrounding Code Review is part of a broader context of rising costs for artificial intelligence tools. Chamath Palihapitiya, a billionaire investor, recently discussed in the "All-In Podcast" the increasing expenses of his startup 8090 on AI tools, which could reach $10 million per year. He emphasized that costs associated with AI, particularly with Cursor and Anthropic, are rising rapidly, without revenues following the same curve.
This situation highlights the financial challenges faced by startups using AI tools and raises questions about the economic viability of these technologies for small businesses.
Concerns About Replacing Senior Engineers
In addition to financial concerns, some developers fear that the Code Review tool may diminish the role of senior engineers. The increasing automation of code review tasks could potentially reduce the need for human experts, raising concerns about the future of these positions. A user on X, under the pseudonym @TukiFromKL, even stated that "Claude has just put a price on your senior developer," highlighting the pressure these tools could exert on the high salaries of experienced engineers.
Karan Kendre, a developer at a design startup, also questioned the logic behind the feature. He wondered that if Claude Code can work on clean code, why couldn't it write it from the start, suggesting that the pricing might be motivated by a desire to maximize profits.
Mixed Reactions in the Developer Community
Reactions among developers remain mixed. Some see these tools as a major technological advancement, while others are concerned about the economic and professional implications. Discussions on X show a divided community, where enthusiasm for innovation is tempered by pragmatic concerns about costs and the impact on traditional jobs in the software development sector.
