A Massive Deletion of GitHub Repositories

On Tuesday, March 31, GitHub witnessed a massive deletion of repositories, orchestrated by Anthropic in an effort to remove unauthorized copies of Claude Code's code. However, this operation took on unexpected proportions. In fact, no fewer than 8,100 repositories were deleted, including many legitimate forks of the code. This action sparked a wave of discontent among GitHub users, who expressed their frustration on social media after seeing their repositories erased without warning.

The deletion of these repositories was perceived as an excessive measure, and Anthropic was quickly criticized for its handling of the situation. Affected developers raised their voices, denouncing the removal of their legitimate work, which highlighted the challenges related to digital rights protection in an open environment like GitHub.

Anthropic Acknowledges Its Mistake and Repairs the Damage

In the face of rising criticism, Anthropic acknowledged its responsibility for this massive deletion. A spokesperson for the company explained to TechCrunch that the initial takedown notice concerned a repository that was part of a network of forks related to the public repository of Claude Code. This error led to the deletion of more repositories than intended.

To rectify the situation, Anthropic withdrew the takedown notice for all repositories except for the one specifically mentioned. GitHub then restored access to the affected repositories, which included one unique repository and 96 forks containing code from the leak. This incident highlights the challenges Anthropic must face as it considers going public, underscoring the importance of rigorous management of digital rights.
