Anthropic Turns to Small Businesses with Claude
Anthropic recently unveiled a new suite of services, Claude for Small Businesses, aimed at attracting a market that has so far been underexplored by AI giants: small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This launch, announced on Wednesday, marks a strategic shift for the company, which now seeks to cater to more modest clients, such as local hardware stores or cafes, rather than giants like Walmart or Starbucks.
Until now, AI adoption has primarily been the domain of large companies, often equipped with substantial budgets. However, this trend is beginning to change, with increasing adoption of these technologies by SMEs. To meet this demand, Anthropic has designed a set of features specifically for these new users.
Tools Tailored to SME Needs
The new features are accessible via a button in Claude Cowork, Anthropic's task automation platform. This platform allows professional users to browse the web, manage files, and execute multi-step workflows. By activating this option, paying users can enjoy a variety of automated services, ranging from accounting to business analytics, as well as generative tools for advertising campaigns.
The suite also includes integrations with several popular software products such as QuickBooks, Canva, DocuSign, HubSpot, and PayPal. These integrations aim to simplify task automation for small businesses.
A Crucial Yet Underutilized Market
According to Anthropic, small businesses account for 44% of the U.S. GDP and employ nearly half of the private sector workforce. However, their adoption of AI has lagged behind that of larger companies. The tools and training available are rarely tailored to their operational modes, which often limits their use to basic functions like chat windows.
For founders and investors, the next major battleground for user acquisition is not the Fortune 500, but the 36 million small businesses that form the backbone of the American economy.
An Ambitious Promotion Strategy
To promote these new features, Anthropic plans a promotional tour across the United States, starting in Chicago and covering a total of 10 cities. At each stop, the company will offer a free AI training workshop aimed at 100 local small business leaders. This initiative underscores the growing importance of SMEs in the AI platform wars, a sector where Anthropic hopes to stand out.
Although the company is slightly behind OpenAI, which launched Enterprise ChatGPT with integration for small teams at the end of 2023, Anthropic is banking on this offensive to win over small businesses.
