Anthropic recently unveiled Claude for Legal, a legal assistant integrated into its chatbot Claude. This innovation could transform the legal sector, traditionally dominated by specialized players, by making law more accessible to the general public.
Since its launch, Anthropic has attracted numerous companies, and with Claude for Legal, it's now the legaltech sector's turn to be impacted. This industry, valued at nearly $1 trillion, could see its practices disrupted by what the startup describes as "the world's most affordable lawyer," a claim that has gone viral on social media through a viral post.
Advanced Features
Claude for Legal is an extension of Claude, available to paying subscribers, and specifically designed for the legal field. Anthropic has developed 12 plugins covering key areas such as commercial contracts, litigation, privacy, AI governance, and intellectual property. These tools allow users to remain within the familiar interface of Claude while accessing advanced legal functionalities.
Furthermore, over 20 connections have been established with software commonly used by legal professionals. This enables, for example, a lawyer to efficiently manage the acquisition of a company by analyzing documents, identifying risky clauses, drafting summaries, and updating tracking tables, all without switching applications. What used to require an entire team for several days can now be accomplished in just a few hours.
Accessibility for the General Public
Anthropic has also partnered with organizations such as the Free Law Project and Courtroom5 to make law accessible to those who cannot afford a lawyer. Claude can directly access their databases, allowing individuals to ask legal questions and receive tailored advice for their situation. However, these collaborations are currently limited to the United States, with no specific offering for French law.
Challenges for Small Firms
While Claude for Legal demonstrates the potential of AI in such a complex sector as law, it also poses challenges for small legal firms. These firms, too small to integrate into the Claude ecosystem, may face increased competition from larger entities benefiting from this technology.
