Anthropic and Its Growth Ambitions
Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, has impressive ambitions for the coming years. It aims to achieve $30 billion in annual revenue by 2026. If this projection materializes, it would allow Anthropic to surpass OpenAI, its main competitor in the artificial intelligence market. To support this ambition, Anthropic has announced a strategic partnership with Google and Broadcom, aimed at strengthening its infrastructure capabilities.
OpenAI: A Significant Competitor
The question arises: Can Anthropic truly surpass OpenAI? OpenAI benefits from a massive user base, nearing one billion, which gives it an undeniable advantage among the general public. However, Anthropic distinguishes itself in the professional market with solutions like Claude Code, which attract large companies willing to invest heavily to integrate AI into their operations. This strategic positioning allows Anthropic to see its revenues grow at a steady pace.
Comparison of Projected Revenues
If Anthropic's forecasts hold true, and if OpenAI maintains its current pace of $2 billion in monthly revenue, or about $24 billion annually, Anthropic could gain the upper hand for the first time. This comparison remains theoretical, but it illustrates the rapid evolution of the artificial intelligence sector. Claude and Gemini, Anthropic's flagship products, are already showing solid performance in various benchmarks, gaining ground on application platforms.
Rapid Development
To put these figures into perspective, it is interesting to note that Google took 13 years to reach such a revenue level, while Amazon took 16 years. Anthropic could achieve this in just five years. However, reaching these revenue levels does not guarantee profitability. The development of generative AI requires costly infrastructures, particularly in servers and specialized chips. The projected revenues for 2026, well above the $9 billion expected in 2025, could be accompanied by a significant increase in expenses.
The Strategic Partnership with Google and Broadcom
Anthropic has established a robust B2B strategy, claiming over 1,000 professional clients, each spending more than one million dollars per year. This ensures the company regular and predictable revenue, while OpenAI is still exploring various methods to monetize ChatGPT, including the potential introduction of advertising.
To support its growth without compromising the quality of its services, Anthropic must address the issue of infrastructure saturation. Recently, the company had to limit the use of Claude, even for its paying subscribers, and restrict certain resource-intensive third-party tools. To remedy this situation, Anthropic has formalized an agreement with Google and Broadcom. This partnership provides access to several gigawatts of computing power through Google's TPUs, specialized AI chips, with deployment expected to begin in 2027, primarily in the United States. This choice makes sense, as Google holds about 14% of Anthropic and already plays a key role in its funding.
