Apple Surpasses Expectations Thanks to Macs

In the last quarter, Apple saw its iPhone sales and service revenues shine, but it was the Mac segment that quietly exceeded expectations. Wall Street investors anticipated Mac revenues in the lower range of $8 billion, but Apple reported a figure of $8.4 billion for the second quarter ending March 28. This result is noteworthy for a segment that is not considered essential to the company. Forecasts had projected stable Mac sales compared to the previous year, but Apple reported a 6% increase in Mac sales.

Apple's total revenue for this quarter amounted to $111.2 billion, marking a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance was partially attributed to recent product launches, notably the MacBook Neo, which was well-received by the public. However, these new models were only available a few weeks after pre-orders began on March 4. Most units were shipped between mid-March and the end of March, and some demand may have been pushed to April due to stock shortages.

Unexpected Demand for Macs

Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed surprise at the demand for the MacBook Neo, describing it as "off the charts" and exceeding the company's expectations. He also mentioned that Apple set a record this quarter for the number of new Mac customers, partly thanks to the Neo. Cook attributed this growth to the use of Macs for running local AI models, such as OpenClaw. The Mac mini and Mac Studio were particularly popular, selling out in just a few weeks.

"These two platforms are incredible for AI and agent tools, and customer recognition of this is happening faster than we anticipated, so we've seen demand exceeding expectations," Cook said regarding these Mac sales. The Mac mini even reached the status of the best-selling desktop in China, a market currently buzzing around OpenClaw.

Supply Challenges and Outlook

Despite these successes, Mac revenues remained stable quarter-over-quarter, suggesting that this new demand has not yet reached its full potential. Cook indicated that it might take Apple "several months" to achieve a balance between supply and demand for the Mac mini and Studio models. He explained that this constraint was not due to a specific issue, but simply a miscalculation of demand.

Corporate demand for the Mac has also played a crucial role. Apple cited several large companies, including Perplexity, that have chosen the Mac as their preferred platform for building enterprise-level AI assistants. Additionally, Apple noted that it was "constrained in terms of supply on the MacBook Neo," and observed that school systems, such as Kansas City Public Schools, were abandoning Chromebooks in favor of the Neo.
