Full Analysis

Apple Music recently announced the introduction of new labels, called "Transparency Tags," aimed at identifying AI-generated content on its streaming platform. This initiative was communicated in a newsletter sent to industry partners, encouraging artists and record labels to voluntarily report works created with the help of AI.

The metadata system proposed by Apple covers four main categories: tracks, compositions, artworks, and music videos. For tracks, the label must be applied when "a material portion of a sound recording" is derived from AI tools. Compositions refer to other elements, such as lyrics, that have been generated by AI. As for artworks, the label applies to static or animated graphics at the album level. Finally, for visual content, whether standalone or integrated into albums, the music video label is required. Multiple transparency tags can be used simultaneously for works that require more than one of these disclosures.

Apple emphasizes that these labels represent a "concrete first step" towards increased transparency in the music industry in light of the growing use of AI. The responsibility for disclosure lies with record labels and distributors, who must report content created with the help of AI.

This initiative from Apple Music comes at a time when other music streaming platforms are also seeking to protect authentic artists and facilitate the identification of AI-generated music. Spotify, for example, is working with DDEX, a music standardization organization, to develop a new metadata standard. Nick Williamson, a senior member of Apple Music, is currently on the board of DDEX. Deezer, for its part, has made its AI-generated music detection tool available to other platforms, while Qobuz introduced its own AI detection system last week.

However, unlike the proactive detection systems of Deezer and Qobuz, Apple Music's "Transparency Tags" are entirely optional. Apple leaves it to content providers to determine what constitutes AI-generated music and visuals, without presuming the use of AI for untagged works.

Despite this initiative, the lack of strict enforcement measures raises questions about the actual effectiveness of this labeling system. It remains to be seen whether creators and record labels will be significantly incentivized to adopt these tags.
