After criticizing Anthropic for its restrictions on the cybersecurity tool Mythos, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced a similar measure for their own tool, Cyber. This decision marks a turnaround, as Altman had previously described Anthropic's strategy as "fear-based marketing."
OpenAI revealed that its tool GPT-5.5 Cyber will be deployed in the coming days, but only for "critical cybersecurity defenders." To gain access, users must submit information about their qualifications and the intended use of the tool through an application available on OpenAI's website.
Cyber is designed to perform complex tasks such as penetration testing, identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities, as well as reverse engineering malware. While intended to bolster corporate defenses, there are concerns about its potential misuse by malicious individuals.
Despite the criticisms directed at Anthropic, OpenAI appears to be following a similar path by limiting access to its tool. This approach aims to ensure that only qualified and legitimate users can utilize Cyber, in consultation with the U.S. government to expand access to those with cybersecurity credentials.
