Matt Cortland's Bold Initiative
Matt Cortland, an entrepreneur specializing in artificial intelligence, has decided to take matters into his own hands to clarify the mystery of pint prices for Guinness in Ireland. To achieve this, he developed the "Guinndex," an innovative tool aimed at measuring the actual cost of this iconic beer across the country. To collect the necessary data, he utilized a voice generated by ElevenLabs, named Rachel, who made over 3,000 phone calls to Irish pubs.
An Average Price That Makes You Think
On March 30, 2026, the Guinndex revealed that the average price of a pint of Guinness in Ireland stood at €6.01. This figure has already had repercussions, prompting at least one pub owner to lower their price. This initiative was born after Matt Cortland paid €7.80 for a pint in Dublin, a price he found excessive. Discovering that the Central Statistics Office of Ireland had stopped tracking the price of Guinness since 2011, he decided to fill this gap using technology.
AI Serving Transparency
To successfully carry out his project, Cortland designed a voice assistant, Rachel, who contacted over 3,000 establishments to inquire about the price of a pint. The information collected was then processed by Claude, an artificial intelligence developed by Anthropic, to create the Guinndex. This dynamic indicator provides an overview of the prices charged, revealing that the €7.80 paid by Cortland was well above the national average, with a more common price around €5.50.
Reactions and Future Perspectives
In most cases, the pub staff did not realize they were conversing with an artificial intelligence. Transcriptions of the calls even show that one bartender joked about a fictitious price of €25 for a pint, before correcting it to a more realistic price of €5. Although the Guinndex has not yet disrupted the beer market, Matt Cortland emphasizes that it has already had tangible effects, such as a 40-cent reduction in the price of a Guinness at one pub. Buoyed by this success, he plans to extend this transparency model to other sectors, including prescription medications and New York-style pizza.
